San Jacinto College to be honored as Deer Park Chamber Industry of the Year
PASADENA, Texas – The Deer Park Chamber of Commerce has selected San Jacinto College as the 2009 Industry of the Year. The College will be honored at the annual Salute to Industry luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center.
“It is truly an honor to be selected as the Industry of the Year,” said San Jacinto College Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer. “We have been in this community for nearly 50 years, and we are honored to be a partner in our community. We look forward to conducting our business in a manner that upholds the strong values and direction of our community.”
San Jacinto College was first established in 1960 as East Harris County Union Junior College. Using renovated buildings in the Pasadena area, the College opened its doors for classes in September 1961 with 876 students. Since then, San Jacinto College has grown to include three campuses and seven extension centers, as well as an early college high school. This Fall semester, the College saw record enrollment numbers, with over 30,000 students attending classes district wide.
San Jacinto College supports the economic growth of the community by providing a local, skilled workforce through our many technical programs and partnerships with industry. In addition, the College works closely with the community and its industries to provide training for current workers.
