Partners in San Jacinto College’s automotive technology program include, from left, Dr. Steven Horton, SJC Central technical education dean; Edgar Cruz, Momentum BMW shop manager; SJC student Marvin Angel; Patrick Hernandez, Momentum BMW shop foreman; David Norman, SJC Central automotive department chair; Michael Falsone, Westbury High School automotive teacher; and Ric Menard, Automotive Youth Education System Houston manager.

Marvin Angel, an exemplary automotive technology student at San Jacinto College (SJC), recently received the prestigious Jack Smith scholarship. The $5,000 scholarship is administered through the Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES), a national organization that coordinates educational partnerships between manufacturers, dealers, high schools and colleges.

Angel earned the Smith scholarship, named for a former chairman of General Motors, because of his high grade point average, and based on an essay he wrote about his educational and career goals.

Angel speaks highly of Westbury High school’s AYES program and San Jacinto College’s nationally acclaimed automotive technology program, especially the internships through which students are able to work at area dealerships. “To me, hands-on training is better because it is better to do the actual work than to just read a book and try to imagine how to do it in your head,” commented Angel, who graduated from Westbury and receives intern training at the Momentum BMW dealership in Southwest Houston. “I think I have a great advantage because I am learning about the real world of business.”

Angel plans to earn an associate degree in automotive technology from San Jacinto College, and would like to transfer to a four-year college to earn a bachelor’s degree in business. His ultimate career goal is to own and operate an independent automotive repair business.
