Veteran chemical engineer and successful businessman Dr. Bill Brookshire recently donated $100,000 to the San Jacinto College (SJC) Foundation to endow five $1,000 annual scholarships for qualifying students majoring in the field of drafting, commonly called Engineering Design Graphics (EDG).
Prior to the recent donation, Brookshire contributed $20,000 to the SJC Foundation over the past two years to fund scholarships for EDG students at the College.
Brookshire chose San Jacinto College to receive his scholarship donations for two main reasons — he attended a community college, and because of the lengthy and positive working relationship between the College and S&B Engineering (the company he co-founded in 1967).
“We have numerous employees who graduated from San Jacinto College, and they are good employees,” Brookshire commented. “We want to continue to work with the College so they can tailor their curriculum and continue to produce graduates who are ready to hit the ground running.” S&B Engineering, based in Houston, provides a complete range of project services for petrochemical, refining, and chemical companies around the world.
To qualify for a Dr. Brookshire scholarship, an applicant must be a full-time San Jacinto College student who is majoring in EDG, and one who maintains a 3.25 minimum overall grade point average. Scholarship recipients are determined by a faculty committee based on financial needs, commitment, and other factors.
“We are very thankful to Dr. Brookshire for his generosity in donating this scholarship funding,” remarked Mike Fox, who chairs the scholarship committee and teaches EDG at the Central campus. “We are also very fortunate that S&B Engineering has hired so many of our graduates, who have become valuable employees. I think it speaks highly of S&B Engineering, as well as our program. It’s a win-win for the company, and for the College.”
San Jacinto College offers a wide range of EDG course options and degree plans at all three campuses.
