San Jacinto College (SJC) and Sam Houston State University (SHSU) recently signed an agreement plan designed to enhance educational opportunities for students attending both schools.
The framework of the comprehensive agreement includes:
• Online articulation — designed to maximize the amount of coursework completed for associate degrees that apply to baccalaureate degrees for over 50 undergraduate majors at SHSU.
• Reverse transfer — allows students to transfer coursework from SHSU back to SJC to complete requirements for an associate degree.
• Joint admission — students can attend both schools simultaneously or alternately, and includes reduced application fees to SHSU.
• Cooperative advising — allows designated college counselors the ability to access transfer transcripts and degree plan software via the Internet to advise students in transfer programs.
• Time-compressed degree programs — qualifying high school students can earn a high school diploma and college associate degree in four years at SJC, a bachelor’s degree in two additional years at SHSU, and master’s degree in one additional year (for a total of seven years).
Information about the agreement is available online at www.shsu.edu/san-jacinto. The agreement was approved by the San Jacinto College Board of Trustees at the regularly scheduled board meeting held Tuesday, January 19.
Dr. Catherine O’Brien, SJC’s dean of teaching and learning, said the agreement is a win-win situation for both schools. “It is a pleasure to work with our education partners at Sam Houston State University,” commented O’Brien. “Both institutions have students at heart and want to see them transfer as seamlessly as possible. Agreements such as this one make it possible.”
