PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College is in partnership with three area school districts to provide more students with an opportunity for a college education through the newly established San Jacinto Foundation Matching Scholarship Program.

The program is designed to provide Galena Park, LaPorte and Pasadena Independent School Districts with $5,000 in scholarship funds – a total of $15,000. The districts then match that amount to award a total of $10,000 in scholarships for individual student scholarships of $1,000.

“The reason for this program was to strengthen the partnership between the San Jacinto College Foundation and the ISDs and to encourage more high school students to apply for scholarships and attend San Jacinto College,” said Susan Arscott, vice president of resource development at San Jacinto College.

Each school district sets the criteria for awarding the scholarship. Recipients receive $500 for either their Summer or Fall semester and $500 for the Spring semester.

The scholarships benefit first generation college students like Hurschella Gibson, a recent graduate from Pasadena ISD.

“I will be the first in my family to go through college,” Gibson said. “This scholarship will help me as I attend San Jacinto College to get a head start in preparing for nursing school.”

Making college a reality for seniors from these three districts is what schools officials envision for this program.

“San Jacinto College is a vital part in furthering many students’ education,” said Cindy Parmer, director of community relations for Pasadena ISD. “By offering these scholarships, our foundation can play a part as well.”
