PASADENA, Texas – Students who transfer from San Jacinto College (SJC) just shy of completing their program now have the option to pick up their SJC associate degree while continuing courses at the University of Houston (UH) through a reverse articulation agreement.

The transfer plan will allow students, who have at least 24 SJC credits, to continue taking the necessary courses at UH to meet the College’s graduation requirements, awarding them with their associate degree. This agreement helps meet the overall goal of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, which encourages all higher education institutions to increase the rate of student completion of programs.

“A student can earn an associate degree while continuing toward their bachelor’s degree,” said Dr. Catherine O’Brien, dean of teaching and learning and SJC. “The combination of UH courses, SJC courses and core complete designation equaling 61 credits is enough for them to graduate from our institution as well.”

Having this additional degree gives students an edge in the workforce, said Dr. Marshall Schott, assistant vice president for instructional support and outreach with UH.

“Students who are in the workforce can benefit by already having their associate degree as they continue to pursue their bachelor’s degree,” Schott said.

San Jacinto College serves more than 27,000 students in over 140 degrees and certificates in university transfer and technical programs.
