The District Grants Management office is a regular think tank.

Eight out of 11 staff members in the office are pursuing college degrees.

The photo above shows the scholars (left to right), along with their job titles, and the college each one is attending: Stacey Himmel, grants account specialist, University of Houston-Clear Lake; Gloria Ramirez, scholarship accounts specialist, UH-CL; Tomoko Olson, assistant grant director, St. Leo University; Cathy Rau, head grant accountant, San Jacinto College; Matthew Rodgers, accounting intern, UH-CL; Ashley Bounds, administrative assistant, SJC; Gina Aguero, grants account specialist, SJC; and Tiffany Brinks, UH-CL.

Kelly Simons, Assistant Vice President of Resource Development, commended the employees for their hard work and diligence.

“I am so proud of all of you for pursuing your academic interests in associate, bachelor, and masters degree programs,” she said. “Your commitment to our San Jacinto College student success initiatives is enhanced by your commitment to your own success. Keep up the good work and remember, the effort will be worth it in the end.”

  • Available September 1st! The Discount Purchase Program

    admin 1:14 pm on August 31, 2010 | 0 Permalink | Reply

During Annual Enrollment we visited each campus bringing important benefits information that would be coming for this next year.  One of the new features is a Discount Purchase Program.

Starting September 1, you and your family can shop using a new online Discount Purchase Program, operated by Beneplace. The program offers discounts
on products and services such as gym memberships, jewelry, furniture, computers, automobiles, travel, electronics, banking, cell phones, weight management
programs, and more. There is no enrollment or membership fee for the program. The purchase program will be available through http://www.discountprogramers.com <http://www.discountprogramers.com>

The program allows you to shop online and purchase certain products or services at discounted prices through the Beneplace website. The discounts are available to all State of Texas and higher education active full-time and part-time employees, retirees, and their families. Please note some discounts will only be available to active employees (e.g. Verizon).

Visit the Discount Purchase Program website, click on any of the offers, and follow the instructions in the “How to Participate” section of the page. Most discounts are only available online; however, you can get some discounts in person.  For example, Toyota has program information posted online, but to complete the transaction you must go in person to a participating dealership. For example, Sears has program information posted online, but the transaction can only be completed in person or over the phone. The discount amount varies by offer. Each offer will list the discount and instructions for receiving it.

New vendors are approved quarterly by ERS; however, once approved, vendor’s discounts are subject to change.  New offers approved by ERS will be added periodically.  At this time, there is an offer from Carperks and Toyota. Both work with select dealers. Some of the vendors who offer discounts require a discount code. The discount code is usually a number listed in the “How to Participate” section of the page. All offers may have different instructions and discount codes. Carefully review the “How to Participate” section on the page.

    Q.  I don’t have internet access is there something Beneplace can mail to me?

    A.   No, but you can visit the site and download a list of available offers.

You will need to work directly with the merchant to resolve any problems with your orders. ERS does not endorse or sponsor any service or service provider. Beneplace can assist with general information about the offer and any escalated customer service inquires.

Our deepest sympathy to Jo Lyday in the recent passing of her husband of
60 years, John Thomas (JT) Lyday on Friday, August 27.  Jo retired after
teaching English for 21years on both Central and South campuses.  She
also served as the director of the South Campus Writer’s Center.  A
memorial service for JT Lyday will be held at Palmer Memorial Episcopal
Church, 6221 Main Street, Houston, TX, 77030, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday,
    18 September 2010.

A reception will follow the service.  Anyone who wishes to honor him
should volunteer to read to children; tutor those in need of help; coach
a children’s football team; participate in improving local schools; or
donate to athletic programs at Baylor University, Waco, Texas.
Educating youth was his passion.  He wasn’t fond of flowers.

From left, Ashley Bounds, Randi Faust, and Ann Kokx-Templet were winners (and losers) in the weight-loss contest.

You will be seeing considerably less of some District Office employees, thanks to a weight-loss contest that featured prizes for the biggest losers (or smallest winners).

During the summer, 17 District employees signed up for the Smallest Winner Challenge. “You’ve heard of the Biggest Loser Challenge, I thought why not start our own Smallest Winner Challenge,” commented Derrick McClendon, a contract administrator in the Purchasing Office, “With some help from two other co-workers (Terrie Beasley and Denise Segelquist), we put the word out here at the District Office. We figured you don’t have to be on the show to lose weight and start your own transformation.” (More …)

  • SJC establishes a local chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges

    Jeannie Peng-Armao 5:01 pm on August 23, 2010 | 0 Permalink | Reply

San Jacinto College (SJC) has established a local chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) to offer support and maximize the potential of women working in higher education.

Dr. Sarah Janes, vice president of Continuing and Professional Development Operations, will serve as president of the SJC chapter; Dr. Toni Pendergrass, vice president of instruction at SJC South, will serve as president-elect; Dr. Catherine O’Brien, dean of teaching and learning, will serve as secretary; and Niki Whiteside, vice president for educational technology, will serve as treasurer. South campus President Dr. Maureen Murphy serves as president-elect of the national AAWCC.

“This is a very valuable organization for women,” said Janes. “Members will learn about professional development, particularly to women working in higher education. Our primary goal will include activities for women that benefit the internal or external SJC community. However, anyone can join.”

Membership is open to all faculty, staff, students and administrators. Annual dues, from date of membership establishment, will be based on an individual’s income level. Janes said the chapter will announce the first meeting in the near future, which will cover finalizing the chapter charter and defining major functions and focus.

“I am looking forward to working with the chapter members to support educational and leadership initiatives that strengthen the college and the community,” said Pendergrass.

The American Association for Women in Community Colleges is an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

Charlotte Jackson & Sean Perrodin shown at the ice cream social.

To energize employees as they start the upcoming Fall semester, the North campus recently hosted an ice cream social, featuring hand-scooped vanilla ice cream, fresh cookies, and a variety of syrups and sprinkly goodies for adding a little pizzazz.

A steady stream of administrators, faculty and staff members cruised through the Chablis in the student center to enjoy the treats and spend a little time mixing and socializing.

The ice cream social was coordinated by Charlotte Jackson, North campus events coordinator.

    Sweet !!!
